The State General Assembly may soon vote on, S.B. 255, which would impose a 5-year review cycle on professional licensing boards, including the Ohio Engineers and Surveyors Board.

S.B. 255 also calls for all occupational licensing boards to produce reports containing specified information to certain standing committees of the General Assembly at least once every five years as part of the bill’s systematic review of occupational regulation. It also requires Director of the Legislative Service Commission to assess all bills introduced in the General Assembly that propose to substantially change or enact occupational regulations and 20% of the occupations regulated by the state annually beginning in CY 2018.

ASCE endorses, supports and promotes the professional licensure of engineers with appropriate standards for education, experience, examination, continuing professional development, and professional conduct to protect and enhance the health, safety and welfare of the public.

As drafted this bill may have unintended consequence for licensing boards, like the Ohio Engineers and Surveyors Board, should deadlines go unmet or the legislature fails to act. For these reasons we urge you to express opposition to this bill. Please visit our “Click & Connect” page so that you can reach out to your State Representative and urge them to vote against S.B. 255
